Uchechi Kalu studied the art of performing, writing and teaching poetry at UC Berkeley. Mentored by the late poet June Jordan, her work touches on themes that she knows personally. Whether she is connecting larger themes of race, gender and immigration status to her own family’s experience or exploring what it means to be a creative who is comfortable in your own skin, Kalu’s work is at the forefront of exploring the issues that face us today with a wit, candor and beauty through language.
